چکیده
We introduce a new multilevel domain decomposition method (MDD) for electronic structure calculations within semi-empirical and Density Functional Theory (DFT) frameworks. This method iterates between local fine solvers and global coarse solvers, in the spirit of domain decomposition methods. Using this approach, calculations have been successfully performed on several linear polymer chains containing up to 40,000 atoms and 200,000 atomic orbitals. Both the computational cost and the memory requirement scale linearly with the number of atoms. Additional speed-up can easily be obtained by parallelization. We show that this domain decomposition method outperforms the Density Matrix Minimization (DMM) method for poor initial guesses. Our method provides an efficient preconditioner for DMM and other linear scaling methods, variational in nature, such as the Orbital Minimization (OM) procedure.

We present what is to our knowledge the most complete 1-D numerical analysis of the evolution and the propagation dynamics of an ultrashort laser pulse in a Ti:Sapphire laser oscillator. This study confirms the dispersion managed model of mode-locking, and emphasizes the role of the Kerr nonlinearity in generating mode-locked spectra with a smooth and well− behaved spectral phase. A very good a...

We present a method to filter a distribution so that it is confined within a sphere of given radius rc and, simultaneously, whose Fourier transform is optimally confined within a sphere of radius kc. Our procedure may have several applications in the field of electronic structure methods, like the generation of optimized pseudopotentials and localized pseudocore charge distributions. As an exam...

A homogeneously broadened unidirectonal ring laser can emit in several longitudinal modes for large enough pump and cavity length because of Rabi splitting induced gain. This is the so called Risken-Nummedal–Graham-Haken (RNGH) instability. We investigate numerically the properties of the multi–mode solution. We show that this solution can coexist with the single–mode one, and its stability dom...

We have performed calculations of the size of the frequency shift induced by a static electric field on the clock transition frequencies of the hyperfine splitting in Yb, Rb, Cs, Ba, and Hg. The calculations are used to find the frequency shifts due to blackbody radiation which are needed for accurate frequency measurements and improvements of the limits on variation of the fine structure const...
